One year in, how’d it go?

Hmm, the fact this is my second blog post speaks volumes. What a year. DAMN you 2020! In all seriousness, I am patting myself on the back for sticking with my anti-consumerism journey for over 365 days. I only shopped for nonessential items from retail stores three times. I bought second hand gifts for all birthdays and special occasions. I connected with entrepreneurs and was able to patron their small businesses. I gave goodwill A LOT of my money. I sold finds I did not need for a profit on five different online merchant platforms and personally transacted over 200 sales.

I thrifted both my clothes and inventory and found the most amazing items. Vintage Chanel, Dior, Versace, Disney plush, antique dolls, period collectibles, y2k drip, the list goes on and on. When quarantine lifted and I was able to thrift in my neighborhood I learned that #1 my neighbors are rich, and #2 it is unfathomable what the elite “throw away”. Stumbling upon so many beautiful donations made me feel spiritually aligned with my secondhand dream.

My biggest joy over the last year has been sending these goods to real people whose paths would have never crossed. I love writing thank you notes and shipping packages off to their new homes. Reading positive reviews from customers encourages me to keep going. I am so proud of our organic social media growth and all the other small business owners I have connected to.

Every person in my life got a piece of my Necessary Ornament lifestyle this year and I know it’s only the beginning. This will most likely be a lifelong journey for me and I have shed my previous embarrassment of thrift culture.
